Prayagraj
Prayagraj is the new name for Allahabad, which actually sounds better. It is famous for the "Kumbh Mela" and also is the meeting point of the Ganga and the Yamuna rivers, something that is very visible to the naked eye.
While we spent a day at Prayagraj, our visits included – the meeting point of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, the Allahabad fort built by Akbar, the famous Hanuman temple where the deity lies prostrate on the ground, visits to the All Saints Cathedral and the Anand Bhavan.
Prayagraj came across as a gentry town, having been the administrative headquarters of the British at some point of time. The civil lines area boasts of upmarket shopping places and homes.
A visit to Anand Bhavan illustrates the Nehru households presence and one can see souvenirs pertaining to their lives.
I was certainly impressed with the city, especially with the older heritage parts and was also pleasantly surprised on seeing a Parsi fire temple – which though poorly maintained, still managed to hold its services.
